BBFC unveil spellbinding Create the Card Competition for Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good

  • BBFC and Universal Pictures launch national art competition for children aged 4 to 11

  • Young artists invited to create the official BBFC Black Card for Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good, in cinemas across the UK from 21 November 2025

  • Winning entry to appear before every UK screening of the film, offering one child the chance to become part of cinema history

  • Initiative aims to spark young people’s imaginations, inspire creativity and empower young people to make informed viewing choices

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), in partnership with Universal Pictures, are delighted to announce the launch of the latest Create the Card Competition, celebrating the magical return to Oz in Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good, flying into UK cinemas on 21 November.

The nationwide competition calls on children aged 4 to 11 to design the official BBFC Black Card for the film. The winning design will be shown before every UK cinema screening of Wicked: For Good, giving one talented young artist the chance to become part of cinema history.

Wicked: For Good sees Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo return to our screens as Glinda and Elphaba. To launch the competition, stars Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero), Jeff Goldblum (The Wizard), and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible) invite children to “step into Oz" and conjure up the most spellbinding design.

Primary-school-aged children are encouraged to draw upon the central themes of Wicked: For Good – friendship, empowerment and embracing what makes us different. Whether it’s Glinda’s radiant charm or Elphaba’s fearless strength, young artists are invited to illustrate both characters, alongside embracing the full spectrum of Oz’s magic and meaning. While competition entrants are invited to depict any aspects of the world of Wicked, those who choose to include Glinda or Elphaba must feature both characters together to represent the iconic Oz duo.

The chosen winner will not only get to see their art on the big screen, they’ll also receive a framed copy of their BBFC Black Card and a magical prize to be revealed closer to the film’s release – no spoilers allowed! Entries will be judged on creativity, originality, and on how well they capture the spirit of the film. The winner will be unveiled in November, just in time to step into the spotlight.

This is the first time the BBFC has run two Create the Card Competitions in a year, and follows the success of the recent initiative for secondary school children, where 14-year-old Elsie from Eastbourne won with her striking design for Superman earlier this year. Her prize included a meet-and-greet with the film’s cast and filmmaker, a truly special experience for self-declared Superman super-fan Elsie.

The BBFC’s Create the Card Competition is a key part of its year-round educational outreach program, which aims to engage, educate and empower young people across the UK to think critically about the content they watch. The competition encourages creativity while teaching young people about age ratings and helping them make informed and confident viewing decisions.

President of the British Board of Film Classification, Natasha Kaplinsky OBE, said: "At the BBFC, we are delighted to be partnering with Universal Pictures to offer 4-11 year olds the Oz-some opportunity to unleash their creativity to design the official BBFC Black Card for Wicked: For Good. From Glinda’s pink sparkle to Elphaba’s emerald energy, we’re looking for artwork that’s unlimited in imagination. Let your creativity defy gravity and follow your yellow brick road for the chance to become part of cinematic history… for good.”

Kezia Williams, Managing Director UK & Eire, Universal Pictures International, said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with the BBFC on this year’s Create the Card Competition. Wicked: For Good is the most anticipated film of the year: the epic conclusion to last year’s cinematic sensation. We’re so excited to offer young fans across the UK the chance to be part of this cultural moment. The winning design will be seen on the big screen before every UK screening of Wicked: For Good, making this a truly unforgettable opportunity. We can’t wait to see the creativity and imagination that children across the UK bring to their designs.”

The BBFC has been issuing Black Cards since 1913, which display the official age rating for a film in UK cinemas.

The BBFC Create the Card Competition for Wicked: For Good is open for entries Wednesday 27 August, and will close on Sunday 12 October 2025. The competition is open to all UK-based children aged 4-11. Teachers and educators can support their students in entering the competition.

A panel, including BBFC President Natasha Kaplinsky, representatives from Universal Pictures and other special guests will oversee the selection process. Then, a special guest judge from Wicked: For Good will select the winning design.

Young people aged 4-11 can enter by either scanning and emailing a copy of their A4 landscape design or posting it directly to the BBFC’s London office. For more details and information on how to enter, visit the Create the Card Competition page. The winner will be revealed ahead of the film’s UK release on 21 November 2025.

Last year’s global cinematic cultural sensation, which became the most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time, now reaches its epic, electrifying, emotional conclusion. The final chapter of the untold story of the witches of Oz begins with Elphaba (Oscar® nominee Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Oscar® nominee Ariana Grande) estranged and living with the consequences of their choices. When a girl from Kansas comes crashing into their lives, they will need to come together one final time, and truly see each other if they are to change themselves, and all of Oz, for good.
