Today, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) announces that the BBFC Youth Panel has created and released a World Movies Map, to coincide with the 94th Academy Awards ceremony taking place on Sunday 27 March.
The World Movies Map is an educational tool designed to shine a light on powerful films and elevate international voices. Students are encouraged to journey across the atlas to uncover the Youth Panel’s selection of recommended titles, whilst also discovering key age rating and ratings information.
From the Italian classic La Dolce Vita, to the multi award-winning film Roma - the map offers an array of age-appropriate recommendations for young film fanatics and cinephiles.
Youth Panel member, Mercy, said: “Part of the reason I wanted to join the BBFC Youth Panel in the first place was to have an environment where the voices of young people interested in film would be heard and appreciated. The World Movie Map has been an exciting idea that I most enjoyed contributing to.”
Sarah Peacock, BBFC Compliance and Education Manager, said: “We are thrilled to unveil this World Movies Map to celebrate the joy of world cinema, with our Youth Panel members sharing their thought-provoking film recommendations. The rise of streaming has unlocked the world of international cinema, with more and more teenagers viewing content from across the globe. Films offer a unique pathway to access different cultures and experiences, and we hope this Map will provide teens with everything they need to accompany their viewing.”
The BBFC Youth Panel was established in 2021 and comprises fourteen young people from across the UK, aged 16-19. They work closely and collaboratively with the BBFC to provide feedback on key classification issues, representing the youth voice, and ensuring that we are meeting the needs of young people.
