Step into the shoes of our Compliance Officers and BBFC film classification to consider what is the age rating for this trailer for Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
The trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance - his return to the franchise after directing the first of the three films - thrusts us (pun intended) back into the world of striptease but picks up the story after events have left the central character broke and bartending in Florida. Channing Tatum reprises his role as Mike, whose chance meeting with Salma Hayek’s Maxandra Mendoza, reignites his passion for dance after she enlists his talent to help her stage a performance that will decide the fate of a decrepit London theatre.
While there are elements present in this trailer that you might come to expect from the Magic Mike franchise - semi-clad dancers performing highly charged sexualised routines - how might these established details present to viewers in an unbidden context? When this trailer was submitted to the BBFC, one of the things our Compliance Officers had to consider was if the content is appropriate for any potential younger viewers and those in the audience who might not be familiar with Magic Mike.
What age rating would you give this trailer, taking into account the issues present and the above questions?
