We Were Liars

There are references to racism and a passing reference to suicide. A woman has flashes of broken memories, which include a person being pushed off a boat and washing ashore with a head wound.

A verbal reference is made to a teenage boy sexually assaulting his friend's sister. There are occasional moderate sex references, as well as references to drug misuse and addiction. A woman has a seizure and has unsettling flashbacks. Upsetting moments occur due to bereavement. A brief reference is made to transphobia. Teenagers drink alcohol at a party.

Discriminatory behaviour is clearly condemned, including when a man makes a racist comment. There are verbal references to drug dealing, and to a woman's former drug habit. A passing remark is made alluding to suicide. People briefly struggle and push others to the ground. A woman collapses as a result of medical episodes, but later recovers. There is an undetailed reference to child death. Adults drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes.

During flashback sequences, a group of teenagers set a house alight using molotov cocktails; however, their behaviour is clearly portrayed as unsafe. Characters attempt to flee a burning building and a person is shown washed up on a beach in a disoriented state. There are condemnatory references to racist attitudes. There are upsetting scenes centred around death and bereavement; the theme of bereavement is frank, yet sensitively handled. Infrequent references are made to prescription drug addiction within the context of recovery.
