Travelling Circus

The film's central teenage character and his younger sister are scared by the presence of their abusive father, who is addicted to alcohol and is often seen stumbling around drunk. Physical abuse is only seen briefly on-screen, and in some scenes the young boy displays bruises on his body from beatings he has received. The siblings suffer from hunger and neglect, with scenes in which the girl cries out for food which her brother is unable to provide. Other scenes of violence include beatings inflicted upon women and children.

Bad language is occasionally mild ('bastard'), and is accompanied by other milder terms ('jerk', 'hell' and 'damn').

A man uses 'fatty' as a term of endearment for his friend.

Adults and children from an indigenous community are sometimes seen naked, or in various states of undress.

A man sexually harasses his younger female employee, kissing her and attempting to be intimate with her despite her clear protests. The man is often seen commenting on the appearance of other young women in the village, sometimes when they are in natural states of undress.

A teenage character has a distressing nightmare in which he is being burned at the stake by angry villagers. In another upsetting scene, he discovers the dead body of his younger sister who has perished after unknowingly consuming a bottle of soap. There are also scenes in which children and other villagers are living in abject poverty, and are exploited by members of a travelling circus. A monkey performs as part of the circus, and is sometimes handled roughly by its owners, or seen wearing a chain. In another scene, the body of a baby monkey is discovered.

Adults smoke cigarettes in some scenes.
