THE THREE MUSKETEERS is a US swashbuckling action adventure from 1948, which adapts Alexandre Dumas' classic tale in which a young swordsman and his colleagues battle to thwart the power-hungry plans of the sinister Cardinal Richelieu.
violence
There are a number of sword fights, often with a fun and swashbuckling tone. Characters are run through or stabbed with swords and several are shot with guns; there is no sight of blood in these battles. A man is impaled on the antlers of an ornamental stag's head, with no sight of injury, and we see another crash into rocks after falling down a ravine. A man shoves a woman to the ground by her face.
threat and horror
A character is led away to be executed by a man with an axe. There are scenes of gun, sword and knife threat. A female criminal is threatened with death on several occasions and there are scenes in which women are grabbed and captured by groups of men.
sex
We see characters kissing and attempting to seduce one another in bedrooms. Male characters make mild but bawdy references to sexual relationships and there are moments of comic innuendo. A man seduces another woman by pretending to be a different person; it is implied they have sex off-screen. In a moment of manipulation, a woman implies she has had sex with a man against her will, but this does not appear to be the truth. A man watches a woman start to change into her nightdress through a hole in her ceiling; this moment is interrupted by others.
injury detail
We see a character's bloody hand in the aftermath of an act of unseen violence. A dead guard has blood smears over his collar.
additional issues
There are undetailed references to suicide when it appears a woman plans to take her own life. Characters grieve for lost loved ones. A man drinks to excess frequently, to the amusement of his friends.
