The Kerala Story 2 Goes Beyond

Women are coerced into marriages, forced into religious conversion and subjected to distressing and physically violent ordeals at the hands of their husbands. This includes force-feeding, beating and the sanctioning of sexual abuse against them. Men in police custody are subjected to prolonged beatings with sticks, which result in bloody injury.

Women in coercive relationships are subjected to verbal and physical intimidation. A person lands heavily on the ground after falling from a roof.

Very mild bad language includes uses of ‘damn’, ‘hell’ and ‘God’.

A woman posts videos of herself performing sexualised dances, which receive comments describing her as ‘sexy’ and ‘hot’.

The film presents a partial and unbalanced view of Islam which focuses on Islamist characters with a radical agenda to the exclusion of more moderate and mainstream forms of the faith. There are regular scenes of discrimination on the basis of religion. There are also passing references to the caste system in India.

A woman is tied to a bed and subjected to a gang rape by a succession of men, although the repeated assaults are not depicted with graphic detail. There is also a scene of sexual threat in which a man accosts a woman in a bedroom while a group of men wait outside; this is followed by crude references to sexual violence. Women are seduced in a sexually abusive way as part of a calculated strategy.

There are visual and verbal references to suicide.

Strong bloody injury detail occurs in the aftermath of violence, including sight of bagged-up body parts.

Occasionally intense upsetting sequences are centred on the helplessness of women trapped in captive situations and the concerns of their families. There are also scenes of bereavement.
