violence
A man behaves in an aggressive and belittling manner towards his wife; verbal references reveal that he also subjects her to beatings and financial exploitation. In another scene, a woman in a state of emotional upset slaps her young child. A man uses a book to repeatedly strike a child, but the blows do not cause injury.
threat and horror
A woman fends away gangsters with a cleaver after they threaten her and attempt to lay hands on her children. Milder threat occurs when a child becomes temporarily lost in a busy city.
language
There is infrequent use of strong language (‘f**k’). Milder terms include ‘whoring’, ‘asshole’, ‘bastard’, ‘crap’ and 'hell'.
sex
Sex references, including verbal references to sex work, are occasional and moderate.
discrimination
A bully addresses another person as ‘filthy cripple’. A woman faces mistreatment and rejection by her husband and his family because the marriage has produced only female children. Other scenes show characters from mainland China facing hostile and discriminatory attitudes in Hong Kong. The film clearly condemns discrimination.
injury detail
We see bloody grazes on a child’s hands and knees following an accidental fall. There is also a sequence of vomiting.
suicide and self-harm
A person attempts suicide but is interrupted before coming to physical harm. Another person takes their own life off-screen.
sexual violence and sexual threat
A woman reacts with anger when a man offers her money for sex. Another woman threatens to castrate a man if he is caught ‘peeking’ at his female neighbour in the shower.
theme
Occasional scenes of emotional distress include a prolonged sequence in which a person grieves over the dead body of a loved one.
alcohol and smoking
People drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes.
flashing/flickering lights
This work contains flashing images which may affect viewers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
