THE DRAUGHTSMAN’S CONTRACT is a 1982 British comedy drama film, set in the late 17th century, in which a woman hires an artist to create a series of drawings for her husband.
language
There is a play on very strong language (‘c**t’), when a man brags about having access to ‘the maturing delights’ of a woman’s ‘count...ry garden’. Other bad language is mild (e.g. ‘arse’).
sexual violence and sexual threat
A woman agrees to a series of sexual encounters with an artist in exchange for a set of drawings, but she appears to do so with reluctance, and when she later attempts to terminate the contract he refuses to release her from their arrangement. On several occasions we see the artist roughly manhandling and undressing the woman, who is sometimes audibly distressed, and after one off-screen encounter we see her spitting and retching into a basin. Sequences of onscreen rape are brief, infrequent and visually discreet.
nudity
A naked ‘living statue’ is shown wandering and posing in a garden, urinating on the ground, and, in one sequence, fondling his flaccid penis. Another scene features sight of a woman’s exposed breast as she reclines with a semi-dressed man in the aftermath of implied off-screen sex.
additional issues
There are moderate verbal and visual sex references. We briefly hear a man screaming as assailants gouge out his eyes, but the process detail and resultant injuries are kept off screen. There is brief sight of slightly bloodied corpses in the aftermath of violence.
