A man flagellates himself with a whip that has, unbeknownst to him, been spiked with nails; we see these digging into his skin and dripping with blood in close-up. A rock is thrown at a child's head; blood spurts upon impact. A man beats a woman; he kicks and whips her before dragging her along the floor by her hair. During the scene, blood is shown spilling down her legs onto her ankles. There are also several scenes in which men engage in fist fights. There are also scenes of domestic abuse in which a man pulls at his wife's hair and, it's implied, hits her with a burning pole. In another scene, a man drags his wife off-screen and, it's implied, beats her.

A man threatens to murder a child, using her as an offering in a religious ceremony. The man's actions are clearly condemned by other characters in the film. There are a couple of scenes in which the child is forcibly pulled onto an alter and threatened with a machete.

There is use of the term 'shit' and 'bullshit', as well as use of milder terms such as 'God'.

In a loving scene, a couple embrace while on a bed.

A villainous character speaks ill of a family's caste and prevents children from castes that are perceived to be inferior from going to school.

A pregnant woman who is being physically abused by husband attempts suicide. Scenes of self-harm occur within a religious context. In one sequence, a man attempts various acts of self-harm including walking on coals, piercing his tongue and rolling over broken glass.

During violence there is sight of blood spurts and blood on people's clothes and faces in the aftermath of violence.

Children jump into a deep well and play in the water unaccompanied by an adult. A man's faith compels him to jump from a great height, risking his life.

A child drowns. There are scenes of childbirth and animal slaughter. There is a passing reference to a woman having a stillbirth. There are several references to cholera and of people dying from the disease.
