A man threatens his child with violence and breaks her toy during a scene of discriminatory abuse; we are also told that he beats her, but the physical violence is kept off screen. In another scene a man falsely accuses a teenage servant of theft and twists her arm behind her back; meanwhile, a woman slaps her young daughter for trying to defend the servant.

The film depicts discrimination against intersex people. For example, during scenes set in 1970s India, a man insists that his intersex child be raised as a boy - against her wishes - on the basis that he already has one daughter, and threatens the child with violence for not conforming to traditionally masculine behaviour. There are also references to intersex infants being subjected to surgery to ‘correct’ their genitals, and being arbitrarily assigned a gender based on the ease of the procedure. In another scene a doctor draws a distinction between transgender and intersex identities by claiming that being transgender is a ‘choice’.
