threat and horror
We see crowds of people running from water cannons and tear gas grenades during footage of riot police breaking up a protest. There are no visible injuries. however.
language
There is infrequent spoken use of strong language (‘f**k’), as well as brief sight of the term ‘motherf**ka’ in graffiti on a wall. Milder terms include ‘pussy’, ‘ho’, ‘shit’ and ‘God’, in addition to the Dutch term ‘hoer’.
sex
There are occasional moderate sex references. Footage shot in a red light district features brief images of a sex worker sitting in the window of a brothel, of signs advertising live sex shows, and of pro-sex worker slogans such as ‘blow jobs [are] real jobs’.
discrimination
References to the persecution and mass murder of Jewish people during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands run continuously throughout the documentary. Many of the Jewish individuals’ stories related in the film end with their murder, either in Amsterdam or at a concentration camp. The references are frequent and upsetting but not explicit, and are delivered in a calm and matter-of-fact manner. There is also occasional use of WWII-era quotations expressing antisemitic beliefs and using racist language. During footage of a modern-day anti-fascist rally, the racist term ‘floating negroes’ - a reference to asylum seekers - is quoted during a speech denouncing discrimination.
drugs
People are briefly shown rolling and smoking marijuana joints.
suicide
There are multiple non-graphic verbal references to Jewish individuals and families - including children - having taken their own lives as a direct result of the Nazi occupation.
sexual violence and sexual threat
There are brief and verbally discreet references to sexual violence, including the sexual exploitation of Jewish women by members of the SS.
