violence
There are real images of police brutality during a civil rights protest, when police turn a water cannon towards a group of black people. Undetailed footage from the Vietnam War shows explosions and soldiers running with guns. King makes a reference to four young girls being murdered.
discrimination
The film features references to discrimination in 1960s America including real footage of the Klu Klux Klan setting fire to a cross, as well as an old racist film portraying the Klu Klux Klan seizing a black character, who is played by a white actor in 'blackface', and throwing him onto a porch after it is implied they have killed him off screen. There are also historic uses of the word 'negro' and 'coloured'.
sexual violence and sexual threat
Racist historic films portray black men as sex offenders; however there is no strong detail. There is a verbal reference to an allegation that King 'looked on and laughed' as a woman was raped.
disturbing images
Disturbing images show children injured due to war. These include close-ups of a little boy's scarred back, and a photograph of a child on a hospital bed with some bloody cuts on his face.
There are undetailed sex references when FBI files refer to King's 'fornication', 'promiscuous relations' and to him partaking in a 'sex orgy'. There is also reference to an anonymous letter sent to King which intended to encourage him to take his own life.
