MERCY is a US drama in which a man who ends up in prison unexpectedly learns the hard way about who he truly is.

MERCY is a US drama in which a man who ends up in prison unexpectedly learns the hard way about who he truly is.

violence
A man is beaten by two others while showering. Heavy blows result in bloody impacts to the man's face, followed by blood running into the plughole immediately after the incident. Other violence consists of undetailed brawls. There are also scenes of strong threat in which inmates approach others holding a shank, but we do not see the weapon in use. The protagonist experiences nightmares in which he is being approached by a particularly threatening and violent inmate.
language
There is very strong language ('c**t'), accompanied by strong language ('f**k', 'motherf**ker', 'c**ksucker'), as well as milder terms ('pussy', 'bitch', 'shit', 'bullshit', 'asshole', 'ass', 'jerk', 'Jesus', 'Christ', 'God' and 'damn').
discrimination
The protagonist, who we subsequently find out is grappling with his sexuality, is subjected to homophobic abuse while in prison. He is frequently called a 'faggot' and a 'cock grabber' by other inmates.
sexual violence and sexual threat
Some of the homophobic abuse that the protagonist endures culminates in sexual harassment, such as when the protagonist is approached in the shower room by another inmate. The inmate caresses his own body and leers at the protagonist, before telling others that the protagonist tried to come onto him. In another scene, an inmate exposes himself to the protagonist, but no nudity is shown on-screen.
additional issues
There are moderate drug and sex references. A man hits a deer with his car and then shoots it, but this all occurs off-screen.
