There are brief and very mild scenes of bullying between siblings, resulting in clear disapproval.

Two scenes show a toddler falling into water and beginning to drown before being rescued. A woman who survived WWII as a child describes a bomb attack that killed her family and nearly led to her own death as well, although the verbal detail is minimal. While being read a story about a scary monster, a child imagines the creature approaching the room and starting to open the door; the child is briefly frightened, but the threat is reassuringly resolved.

A small girl is annoyed to learn that Japan is observing a national celebration for boys but not for girls.

A fish’s head is cut off, without bloody detail, during a scene of food preparation.

There are occasional scenes involving complex feelings, emotional upset and bereavement, all filtered through the understanding of a young child. In one such scene, the girl finds her father crying, and is sad and confused to learn that her grandmother has died. These themes are handled in a sensitive manner, however, and the overall tone is not dark or distressing.
