violence
There are scenes of, and references to, domestic abuse throughout the film. For example, family members repeatedly attempt to ascertain the sex of a woman’s unborn child, intending to pressure her into having an abortion if the foetus is female; there are also verbal references to her having been forced to abort multiple pregnancies in the past. In another scene we hear the sound of off-screen blows and cries which imply a man is beating his wife, but we are then shown that the couple are faking the beating to appease the family. Another woman shows bruises on her face from being beaten by her husband off screen. The film is critical of domestic abuse and features a clear message in support of the rights of women and girls.
discrimination
Sexism is pervasive in the story, with the protagonist's wife valued mostly in relation to her ability to produce a male heir for the family. There are references to miscarriages and abortions of female babies. There are scenes in which a male elder blames the harassment of local girls by drunken boys on the girls' perfume. By the end of the film, some male characters learn to see the error of their ways.
There are scenes of moderate threat, including one in which a man threatens to castrate himself unless his wife’s would-be attackers let her leave. There is also a brief scene of knife threat, when a woman appears to be about to stab a sleeping man. There are brief moderate verbal references to street harassment of schoolgirls, and infrequent moderate references to miscarriage. Other issues include mild sex references, rude humour and bad language (e.g. ‘bloody’).
