violence
People are tortured in order to extort money from them and their families. A man is seen dripping hot wax onto one victim, and others are hung upside down, their legs and arms tied together. A person is struck with the butt of a gun and falls to the ground.
threat and horror
In a prolonged sequence, migrants crossing the desert are confronted and threatened by armed men who rob them at gunpoint, roughly handling and striking those who don't comply with their weapons. They force each of the group to consume laxatives in order to check they are not hiding anything within bodily crevices, and some of the group are separated from loved ones and abducted.
language
There is use of mild bad language (‘shit’, ‘crap’) and milder terms including ‘damn’.
discrimination
A person references how he will be turned away from a hospital because of his race. Discrimination is clearly condemned by the film as a whole.
injury detail
Bloody wounds are visible on the faces and bodies of characters as a result of violence, including a gunshot wound to a person's leg. There is the sight of dead bodies, including blood covered corpses of those who have been murdered.
theme
Emigration is a theme of the film, and there are scenes in which people attempt to travel covertly to other countries, avoiding legal border crossings. This leads to upsetting sequences, including when a person tries to help a woman dying in the desert, and when a dwindling water supply on a boat leads to on board friction. A man warns others to conceal their money when crossing the border, and subsequently it is implied that a person is inserting their savings rectally to take heed of this advice.
