I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE is a US horror drama, from 1943, in which a nurse is hired to go to a Caribbean island to care for the wife of a sugar plantation owner, who appears to be afflicted with an unusual and disturbing trance-like condition.
violence
A character is stabbed in the arm with a sword, but there is no sight of injury detail; the person seems to experience no pain for what are implied to be supernatural reasons. It is implied a character is stabbed to death off-screen, but we do not see this take place.
discrimination
There are discriminatory attitudes toward black people, white people refer to their religious practices as 'primitive' and adopt a patronising view of them. There are dated, stereotypical depictions of people practicing the voodoo religion. There are verbal references to the historic slave trade. A black man uses the dated term 'coloureds'. Characters describe a woman who is in a trance-like state as 'a mental case'.
drugs
There are brief, undetailed verbal references to the use of opiates.
general
Characters in trance-like states appear menacingly to others, often in dark, secluded locations, during sequences of mild sustained threat. People are seen taking part in disturbing ceremonies and rituals, one of which involves a doll being used to control a woman's movements. Around the setting of a voodoo ceremony are animal and human skulls, as well as a dead animal hanging from a tree.
additional issues
A man drinks to excess and we learn his family are concerned that he is relying on alcohol too much; they attempt to intervene.
