Scenes of domestic abuse include those in which a stepmother beats her stepsons with a rolling pin. In one scene, the woman holds a stepson's hand close to a lit gas-ring. The woman also verbally threatens to kill the boys, and punishes them by forcing them to undertake onerous domestic chores. However, these scenes are responsibly filmed with visual restraint, discretion, and limited detail.

A man's car is pursued through a tunnel before an armed assailant shoots into his vehicle. However, the pursued man is not struck by any bullets. A woman recalls to her adult son that his father threatened to strangle her.

There is infrequent strong language ('f**k'), as well as milder terms ('bitch', 'whore', 'shit', 'piss', 'God', 'damn', 'hell').

There is a brief and impressionistic sex scene between a man and a woman shown in flashback from a child's perspective. A man holding a marijuana joint offers it to another man who refuses the offer. Drug misuse is not condoned by the work as a whole.

A man's hand is briefly bloodstained following an off-screen industrial accident. There is also brief limited sight of healed scars on a man's back.

A man is told that a substance used to drug him can 'cause suicide'.

Teenage boys briefly steal a car.

A man angrily rejects his mother due to her abandonment of the family when he was young. However, the pair are are subsequently reconciled after the man discovers the reasons for her abandonment. The man rejects his father after discovering that he was responsible for the breakdown of the family.

The film contains scenes in which adults smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol.
