violence
There are strong scenes of gun violence featuring blood spurts and bloody aftermath detail. A man is stabbed in the hand in close-up. Milder violence includes crunchy blows and sequences of attempted strangulation. There are also infrequent verbal references to a man having brutally beaten his wife and son.
threat and horror
There are occasional scenes of strong threat in which frightened people are aggressed, attacked or murdered by a serial killer.
language
There is use of strong language (‘f**k’, ‘motherf**ker’). Milder terms include ‘bitch’, ‘shit’, ‘bastard’, ‘ass’ and ‘asshole’, in addition to use of the ‘middle finger’ gesture.
sexual violence and sexual threat
Scenes of sexual threat occur when two girls in their late teens accompany a young man to hang out in a motel room, unaware that he is dangerous and has sinister intentions. After the girls fall asleep, the man kisses up the length of one of the girls’ legs, raising her skirt and revealing her underwear. However, it is not suggested that his actions go any further. It is briefly and discreetly implied in another scene that a minister may have been sexually abusing a young girl.
There are brief instances of historical homophobia, including use of the terms ‘queer’ and ‘faggot’; however, the film does not condone discrimination. Occasional moderate sex references include casual verbal references to ‘hard-ons’, ‘jerking off’ and ‘liking it rough’. Song lyrics in the background of a scene contain a reference to ‘smoking grass’. A trained chimpanzee is kept in a cage and dressed in human clothes; however, there is no unsimulated animal cruelty involved.
