There are a number of scenes of strong bloody violence, including graphic depictions of deaths by shootings, stabbings and beatings. Men are executed and impaled. Such scenes result in considerable bloodshed and gory injuries, including an ear being bitten off and a man's cheek being torn.

There is infrequent use of very strong language ('c**t'), occasional use of a strong language ('f**k'), accompanied by other terms ('bitch', 'whore', 'shit', 'bastard', 'bloody', 'Jesus', 'God' and 'damn').

There are scenes of sexual activity, including a man thrusting into a naked woman. There are also references to sex, prostitution and human trafficking.

The American Civil War provides the backdrop for events, in which African American men are subjected to racism and violence, such as a black man lynched and his body set on fire. Others are beaten and verbally abused, with use of racist language ('n****r', 'monkey', 'jigg', 'blackie', 'negro' and 'coloured'). Lynchings and references to racism and slavery in the Civil War period are also depicted in black and white drawings. White actors wear make-up to portray African American characters in a farcical stage performance. Conflicts erupt between Protestant Americans and Irish immigrants, as well as other ethnic groups, and is accompanied by other racist and discriminatory terms (e.g. 'chink', 'potato-eater').
