The film deals with bereavement, illness and death. Scenes depict people suffering from AIDS, with their conditions deteriorating over the course of the film. A character loses a parent in a fatal car crash.

Characters are frequently seen smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. In one scene, underage teenagers ask an older boy to buy them liquor.
