Two men briefly beat and repeatedly kick a gay man; however, there is limited detail and homophobic violence is not condoned by the work as a whole. A man grabs a woman's face during an argument, but the woman breaks free and slaps his face. In another scene, a woman strikes her husband with her handbag after accusing him of cheating on her.

Scared adults and children run through war-torn streets as buildings burn and smoulder; however, there is no injury detail. A woman tells her husband she wants a divorce, and he tells her she will have to choose which one of their two children she will take custody of.

There is moderate bad language ('bitch'), as well as milder terms (for example, 'arse', 'asshole', 'bastard', 'hell', 'damn').

There are verbal references to characters cheating on their partners, and to affairs.

There are several scenes of emotional upset, some of which involve people being taken ill and subsequently dying. These occasionally prolonged scenes are accompanied by people crying and grieving, and following a death in the family a woman's hair starts falling out due to stress.

The film contains several scenes in which adults smoke cigarettes. These scenes do no promote or glamorise smoking, and reflect the time period in which the film is set.
