There is infrequent very mild slapstick.

Scary scenes in which a young girl is chased and menaced by a creature which swirls around her in a dark cloud and transforms into figures which grab at her are occasionally prolonged and intense. However, the action is set in a fantastical, dreamlike underwater world and the girl finds a protective character who comes to her aid in precarious situations and is a reassuring presence. In one scene, the two characters are stranded in the open sea where they sustain mild sunburn, but ultimately come through the ordeal.

A young girl struggles to come to terms with feelings of abandonment after her mother separates from her father when their marriage breaks down. The girl has memories of her parents arguing, and has trouble adjusting to life with a new stepmother and the presence of a half-brother. Although the girl is often seen in a distressed and tearful state, her fantastical adventures help her to accept what has happened and to look at her life from a positive perspective.
