violence
There are references to racist violence and threats throughout, in addition to infrequent non-graphic references to a hypothetical case of domestic violence.
language
There is infrequent use of very strong language (‘c**t’) as well as more frequent use of strong language (‘f**k’). Milder terms include ‘bitch’, ‘dick’, ‘shit’, ‘bullshit’, ‘ass’ and ‘crap’.
sex
Infrequent moderate sex references include use of the term ‘f**k’ in the sexual sense.
discrimination
The film focuses closely on the theme of racism, which is clearly criticised throughout. Scenes of racist behaviour include a montage of phone footage of white women aggressively confronting people of colour, using threatening language, false accusations of threatening behaviour, and slurs including ‘n****r’ and ‘Mexican dog’. We also see montages of racially abusive, misogynistic and threatening tweets. There is use of discriminatory terms such as ‘Muslim c**t’ and ‘paki’ in reported speech, as people describe being subjected to racist behaviour including death threats. References to racist violence such as lynchings and massacres include brief black-and-white images of the brutally disfigured dead body of Emmett Till.
sexual violence and sexual threat
There are infrequent non-graphic references to sexual violence, particularly in the context of discussion of historical lynchings which occurred after white women falsely accused Black men of rape or harassment.
suicide and self-harm
An Asian American woman recalls scraping her skin with a rock in an attempt to rub off her skin colour after being subjected to racism at school.
injury detail
There is brief use of still black-and-white images of the badly injured corpse of 14-year-old Emmett Till, who was tortured and murdered in a racist attack in 1955.
flashing/flickering lights
This work contains flashing images which may affect viewers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
