violence
There is mild, fantastical violence as children play games in which they imagine themselves to be Native Americans or fighting pirates. The sticks and branches they carry turn, in their imaginations, into swords, spears and bows and arrows. There are undetailed sword slashes, a stabbing and the cutting off of a pirate captain's hand. A young girl in an orphanage is struck on her hand as punishment. A man says his hand has been crushed as punishment for not settling a gambling debt; the only injury detail is a mark that has been branded on his arm, but the image is brief and without gory detail. There are also moments of mild threat.
theme
There are mild upsetting scenes in the aftermath of a boy's accidental death by drowning as his parents and siblings grieve for him. The drowning is shown without unduly disturbing detail, although there a brief shots of the boy floating on the surface of the water and a later image in a photograph of the body lying in a coffin.
There is infrequent very mild bad language ('God'). There is stereotyping of Native American 'Indians' in an adventure game played by children, as well as stereotyping of the roles of women and comments about the "lower class", all of which are placed in the context of the historical period in which the drama is set.
