Characters occasionally slap one another and a woman lightly strikes a man using a slingshot.

Characters appear to be consumed by a sandstorm and villagers face extreme thirst and ill-health during a scorching drought.

There are occasional sex references, including a conversation in which a woman implies a younger character her romantic relationship will eventually become a mechanically sexual one, due to the pressures of life and sexist attitudes toward women in the village.

A woman is superstitiously blamed for natural misfortunes which have befallen her village, such as drought, due to the disapproval that exists around her marriage; she and her husband are both criticised for defying social expectations. There are repeated references to sexist attitudes she strives to overcome.

The body of a dead cow is hacked and sliced for meat by several people; we do not see any close up detail of this, but large amounts of blood spill from the carcass in a sustained camera shot. A woman cuts her finger as she peels vegetables, resulting in brief sight of blood.

A woman uses a slingshot to kill a bird; there is brief sight of the impact and then of bird's body on the ground. She later kills a lizard in the same way. There is sight of a number of dead cows who have either succumbed to the heat during a drought or have been killed off-screen by villagers.

Characters grieve for lost loved ones and there are verbal references to death.
