violence
During a surreal dream sequence, a man is repeatedly stabbed by his naked girlfriend, with brief breast and rear nudity and moderate bloody detail. One man beats another to death with a spade, covering the victim’s face and neck with blood. In another scene we see a man attack his girlfriend, striking her with a spade until her clothes are bloody; this is followed by a series of impressionistic bloody images implying that he is dismembering the body. However, it is subsequently revealed that this incident occurred in his imagination, and that the 'blood' from the 'dismemberment' sequence was paint.
sex
A brief strong sex scene features rear nudity and sexual moaning. Other scenes contain moderate visual and verbal sex references.
sexual violence and sexual threat
There are verbal references to a 'perverted' woman having supposedly watched through a one-way mirror as her 17-year-old daughter had sex with various men. In another scene we learn that the girl’s first ‘affair’ was with a schoolteacher when she was 14. A man starts to get physically rough with his girlfriend while undressing her for sex, leading her to push him away and leave the room. A flashback shows a man secretly spying on his girlfriend as she shares a naked embrace with another man.
nudity
The film contains sexualised breast and rear nudity, including images from pornographic magazines and a sequence in which an artist rapidly flicks through a series of photos of naked women’s breasts and torsos interspersed with moderate images of real war and famine.
additional issues
There is infrequent use of strong language (‘f**k’), in addition to milder terms (e.g. ‘bitch’, ‘whore’). Scenes of threat include a brief but intense sequence in which a man ties up and gags an underwear-clad couple before covering their bodies in paint. A series of images depicting real war violence and famine include a black-and-white photo of soldiers handling what appears to be a moderately bloodied dead body. A character’s mental health gradually deteriorates throughout the film, culminating in scenes in which he is involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility.
