The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has today released a new podcast episode, featuring an exclusive takeover from the BBFC Youth Panel, where they reveal the scary children’s films they watched when growing up which turned into pure nightmare fuel. Across a six month period, the Youth Panel has been responsible for scripting, editing, hosting, and promoting the podcast, with the members themselves spearheading the initial ideation and overseeing its development into a finalised product for launch, ahead of Halloween.
Established in 2021, the BBFC Youth Panel comprises fourteen young people from across the UK, aged 16-19. They work closely and collaboratively with the BBFC to provide feedback on key classification issues, representing the youth voice, and ensuring that we are meeting the needs of young people. Further information can be found here.
In this 112th podcast episode, listeners are given the exclusive opportunity to hear from the BBFC Youth Panel members as they recall their thoughts on Coraline, Harry Potter, Toy Story 3, amongst other well-known film titles and franchises geared towards young people.
They humorously reminisce and anecdotally recall these pivotal viewing moments, discovering newfound connections through shared experiences. Meanwhile, they explore whether the scenes in question demonstrate filmmakers thinking creatively about the limits of what they can show at younger age categories, or if it was really too soon for face-melting curses and soul-snatching monsters. Listeners can also partake in some light-hearted Harry Potter trivia questions! Finally, the Youth Panel members offer an abundance of carefully curated film recommendations across a range of age rating categories for listeners of all ages to add to their watchlists over this Halloween period.
The BBFC podcast is designed to provide parents, educators, caregivers and film fans with insider information about our age ratings, and what they can expect to see if they watch the films with their family. This episode also gives young people the opportunity to reflect on the films they watched when they were younger which left them with goosebumps.
Listen for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or on the BBFC website.
