TOP GUN is a 1986 US film set in a Navy Academy for combat pilots. It was originally classified '15' for cinema release in 1986, at a time when there was no '12' classification available. However, when the '12' certificate was introduced for cinema films in 1989, the original '15' classification was revoked and replaced with a '12'. TOP GUN was classified '15' for video release in 1987 (the '12' certificate was not introduced for video works until 1994). However, the DVD version was subsequently classified '12' in 2004. This 3D Blu-ray release has been classified '12' for one use of strong language and moderate sex and sex references.

The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent'. TOP GUN includes a single use of strong language, which occurs as an exclamation and which is not aggressive, sexual, or directed at another person. It also includes a brief and undetailed sex scene, which is filmed largely in silhouette. Although some thrusting is briefly implied, the scene only shows the couple's head and shoulders and cuts away before the woman's dress is removed. This scene exceeds the terms of the Guidelines at 'PG', which state 'Sexual activity may be implied', and is more appropriately classified at '12' where ' Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed'. There are also some moderate sex references, including the pilots bantering about fighting and flying giving them a 'hard on', a reference to paying $20 for "carnal knowledge on the premises", and some references to 'getting laid' and finding "a girl to talk dirty to me". These exceed the terms of the 'PG' Guidelines where there may be 'Mild sex references and innuendo only' but are permissible at '12' where 'Sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers'. The film also features some uses of moderate language, including uses of 'pussy' and 'dickhead'. The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Moderate language is allowed'.

TOP GUN also features some milder bad language, including frequent uses of 'shit' and occasional uses of 'son of a bitch', 'asshole' and 'screw' . There is also some mild violence, including undetailed sight of enemy pilots being blown up, although all that is shown is spectacular explosions.
