TONI MORRISON: THE PIECES I AM is a documentary concerning the life of American writer Toni Morrison.

Disturbing images

There are images of real dead bodies in black and white photographs showing the aftermaths of lynchings of African American men.

Discrimination

The film contains discriminatory language (for example, 'ni**er', 'negro', 'darkies', 'colored', 'picannies), much of which features within a historical context and within a work exploring and analysing racism, discrimination and sexism. The film as a whole clearly does not condone or endorse racism or discrimination.

There are also visual references to discrimination (for example, an archival sheet music cover featuring black male musicians called 'The Funny Little Darkys', and which is referred to by a commentator as "Racist Sheet Music"), as well as images showing black men wearing slave collars around their necks.

The film also contains references to rape and child murder; however, such references are brief and lack strong detail. There is also mild bad language ('shit', 'pissed'), as well as a scene in which Toni Morrison describes how, as a child, she and her friends began spelling out a strong term. However, the complete word is never spoken.
