RED LETTER DAY is a horror comedy in which two teenagers and their mother receive mysterious letters challenging them to murder their neighbours.

Violence

There is strong violence, resulting in gory injury. This includes a man's face being slashed with a bladed weapon, splitting his lip and palate, as well as a scene in which a boy is hit with a large hammer, breaking his leg, with the broken bone visible through his clothing. In other scenes, people are attacked with knives, guns, drills, a meat tenderiser and other weapons.

Though the tone is blackly comic, there is strong threat, including home invasion scenes. There is also strong language ('f**k', 'motherf**ker'), as well as milder terms such as 'bitch', 'crap', 'shit', 'dickhead', 'asshole' and 'turd'. There is a scene in which a woman finds her son's telescope trained on the bedroom window of a neighbour, who is seen cavorting, topless. In one scene a white man unleashes a racist tirade about ISIS to a neighbour, and in another a man shouts 'faggot'.
