RAFIKI is a Kenyan drama in which two young women face the hostility of their community when they fall in love with each other.

Violence

Two women are outed as gay and attacked by a mob who deliver blows and kicks; in the aftermath the victims are seen with blood on their faces. In another scene, two women become involved in a brief fight during which one of them is pushed into a water fountain where she hits her head.

Language

There is infrequent strong language ('f**k'), as well as milder bad language including uses of 'shit', 'God' and 'hell'.

Discrimination

As well as the homophobic attack on the two women, discrimination is expressed in the mocking of a homosexual man who is called 'fag', 'faggot' and 'homo'. The film does not endorse discriminatory attitudes or behaviour.
