THE PUNISHER – WAR ZONE is crime action thriller based on a Marvel comic. It tells the story of Frank Castle, a vigilante driven by the violent deaths of his family. Believing that threats of violence, torture and murder are acceptable crime fighting tactics, here he confronts a violent psychopath and his gang with gruesome results. The film was passed ‘18’ for strong bloody violence and gore.

The BBFC Guidelines at ‘15’ state that ‘violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury’. From the film’s outset however there is a detailed focus on strong violence and its result that was considered inappropriate at ‘15’ and better placed at the adult ‘18’ category. In one scene for example, a man is shown to have his throat cut in close up, resulting in a big gush of blood and another man having the leg of a dining chair kicked inside his eye socket, again shown in close up. Our ‘15’ Guidelines also state that ‘the strongest gory images are likely to be unacceptable’. With another scene showing a man’s head literally explode as he is riddled with automatic weapon fire, an ‘18’ was also considered necessary for the film’s levels of gore.

Additionally, THE PUNISHER – WAR ZONE features frequent use of strong language.
