LOVELACE is a drama about Linda Lovelace, who starred in the 1972 pornographic film DEEP THROAT. The film focusses on her relationship with her husband, Chuck Traynor, and the impact that starring in DEEP THROAT had on her life.

There are scenes which take place on the set of DEEP THROAT, showing actors making the film. No explicit detail is shown, but it's very clear what is happening. In another scene Chuck teaches Linda how to perform 'deep throat' fellatio and they discuss her fear of choking. When she does perform the act, her hair completely covers her face and his genitals. There is some nudity, such as when Linda and Chuck have sex at home and when Linda poses topless for a magazine photo shoot. There are also scenes in which people are watching porn films, with brief footage showing naked people apparently engaged in sex, but again no explicit detail is visible.

There are also frequent strong verbal sex references, such as a dialogue scene from DEEP THROAT in which an actor playing a Doctor tells Linda's character that her clitoris is down her throat and the only way to relieve this is for her to perform deep throat fellatio. There are frequent references to "having a cock down your throat".

A major theme of the film is domestic abuse, with several scenes showing Chuck threatening and attacking Linda. Just after they are married, we see them lying on a bed together, then him gripping her hard by the throat and ripping her blouse to bare her breast. He rolls her over and lies on top of her, suggesting that he is penetrating her as she protests and tells him to stop. There is no strong visual detail and the focus is on her face, but the scene has a strong emotional impact. Linda is clearly upset by what has happened, and from this point in the film we are shown more examples of Chuck's abusive treatment of her, with several scenes in which he grabs her and shouts at her, and one sequence in which he forces Linda to stay in a motel room with a group of men who have paid to have sex with her. She screams and resists as the men come into the room and handcuff her to the bed, then we cut to a scene of her, subdued and upset, arriving back home with Chuck. What happens with the men is not shown, but the impact is strong.

Further issues include several scenes of drug use, with characters smoking joints and snorting cocaine, and strong language ('f**k').
