THE HAMMER is a biographical drama in which a talented boxer is offered a route out of prison through sport.

Violence

There are a number of scenes of strong bloody violence, including stabbings, throat slashings, and a scene in which a man is burned to death when he is placed into a piece of industrial machinery.

Sexual violence

There is a scene of sexual violence in which a group of men rape a transgender woman during a prison riot.

Discrimination

The story takes place in a 1980s US prison, and there are numerous instances of discriminatory language and behaviour. Much of this is homophobic and transphobic, with terms like ‘faggot’, ‘sissy’, ‘queer’ and ‘mud packer’ used frequently. There is also racism; a black boxer is referred to as ‘monkey’ and ‘n*gger’ (by a black opponent). A woman who shows an interest in him is asked, sarcastically, if she has ‘jungle fever’. None of the discrimination is condoned by the film.

Language

There is infrequent very strong language (‘c**t’) and strong language (‘f**k’, ‘motherf**ker’) throughout, as well as milder terms including ‘bitch’, ‘cock’, ‘whore’, ‘asshole’ and ‘shit’.

There are some crude verbal sex references, and some drug misuse, including heroin.
