THE DANISH GIRL is a period drama, based on the novel by David Ebershoff, about an early recipient of gender reassignment surgery in the early 1930s.

Sex

There are a couple of scenes featuring nudity in a sexual context. The first scene shows the central couple preparing to have sex; the scene features some focus on breasts and buttocks as the couple kiss and embrace. The second scene shows the central character watching a female striptease act; this includes some focus on the woman rubbing her hands over her body, including her breasts and down towards her crotch, as the central character mimics her actions.

More generally, the sexual chemistry in the film is intense and complex.

There is a sequence of non sexual nudity in which the central character's penis is tucked between the legs to demonstrate how the genitals may appear if they were female rather than male. The penis is fleetingly seen. There is also sight of full nudity in art works.

There is a scene of violence in which the central character is attacked by two bigoted men who deliver punches to the face and then a series of kicks. Some cuts and bruises are seen on the central character's face in the aftermath of the assault. There is an abusive use of the term 'whore' during this scene.

Some scenes detailing the central character's transition are emotionally intense, including sequences in which treatments are attempted.

The film also contains some sex references, usually in a medical context, for example to the regularity of 'copulation' during the central couple's marriage.
