CALVARY is a black comedy drama in which a priest is told that he is going to be killed and is given time to place his affairs in order.

One use of very strong language ('c**t') is delivered by a businessman without any aggression. There are several uses of strong language ('f**k'), as well as other bad language including 'arse', 'bastards', 'bloody', 'dicks', 'pricks', 'shit' and 'screwing'.

There are strong verbal references, including references to child sexual abuse when an adult victim talks about his experience at the hands of a priest. In other scenes an apparent male prostitute uses graphic language when talking with a priest about his behaviour.

Bloody violence occurs in a scene where a character, having already been shot in the stomach, is shot in the head, resulting in a large spray of blood from the back of the character's head and staining the land where the victim falls.

The film also includes infrequent portrayals of drug use. In one scene a man in a pub bathroom snorts cocaine, and in another two men share a cannabis joint. However, the film as a whole neither promotes nor encourages drug misuse. There are references to domestic violence and one character is seen with a bruised eye. There are also a number of dialogue references to suicide, but neither the individual references nor the film as a whole encourages suicide.
