LAST FLIGHT HOME is a US documentary about the final days of an elderly man as he and his family prepare for his assisted death.

theme
The documentary presents a frank look at the final fifteen days of a man's life as he and his family prepare to end his life legally under California legislation. The man, who had been paralysed for forty years as a result of a stroke, is seen and heard at various points expressing his wish to end his life in a dignified and peaceful way. There are upsetting scenes as family and friends come to terms with the man's decision and ultimately say their final goodbyes. The documentary ends with family members preparing the prescribed drugs for the man to take, before he dies in the presence of his loved ones. The man's body is seen being prepared and then taken away by medical professionals. There are also references to mental health and the various struggles experienced by the man and his family in the years following his stroke. There are references to suicide and the use of prescribed medications, such as Prozac, to help with poor mental health and depression.
There is implied use of strong language ('effed'), accompanied by other milder terms ('shit', 'ass', 'piss', 'crap', 'balls', 'bullshit', 'hell' and 'God'). There are comic references to sex, such as jokes relating to masturbation and the male anatomy. There are references to historical racism, such as the segregated South in the US. Discrimination is recalled to have been experienced by the protagonist by his own company whilst he was in a wheelchair, which is clearly not condoned. There is also very mild rude humour and brief references to alcohol addiction.
