Twitter Q&A 31st Oct 2016

Date 31/10/2016

Over the previous week, we asked our followers to tweet us their classification questions about classifying horror, gore threat & all things scary using the #askbbfced hashtag.

The #askbbfc answer session took the most interesting questions and answered them during a 30 minute session. If you missed this, the transcript of questions and answers follows below.

We aim to hold a twitter Q and A once a month and we’ll give plenty notice about when we’re collecting questions, whether there is a specific theme and when the answer session will take place. We use this format to ensure that any questions that require detailed answers can be researched if required and formulated into as few tweets as possible.

You can send longer questions you have to us at any time, by emailing us.

@BBFC. Thank you to everyone who tweeted #askbbfced questions for our #Halloween #askbbfced Q&A

@BBFC. If you have any follow-up questions after this answer session tweet us using #askbbfced

1. Q. @BBFC. #askbbfced our first question today is from Ryan B ‏@TheChewDefense

Q. @BBFC. How did Deathgasm get a 15? Yes it may be over the top but there are 3 or 4 "c bombs" #askbbfced

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced #Deathgasm is rated 15 for strong bloody violence, gore, sex references, very strong language

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced very strong language may be passed at 15 depending on who uses it, how it's used & the frequency

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced there are three uses of very strong language in #Deathgasm & this is acceptable at the 15 level

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced two of the uses are angry but are not accompanied by any violence #askbbfced

A. @BBFC. The long BBFCinsight for #Deathgasm is available here:

2. Q. @BBFC. #askbbfced James Ferguson ‏@LucioFulciFan has a question about TheNewYorkRipper

Q. @BBFC. We see worse on TV and in Movies today. Why is Lucio Fulci's TheNewYork Ripper still censored on these shores #AskBBFCed #FulciLives

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced #TheNewYorkRipper was most recently classified in 2011 & compulsory cuts were required to remove sexualised violence for an 18 rating

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced we do still ask for cuts at 18 for some issues including certain depictions of sexualised violence #askbbfced

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced you can read more about our research into classifying depictions of sexualised violence here:

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced we're working on a case study for #TheNewYorkRipper & publish it next month

3. Q. @BBFC. #askbbfced Rhys ‏@RuhBuhJuh wants to know about #30DaysOfNight

Q. @BBFC. you now rate 30 Days Of Night as an 18, but I specifically remember seeing it in the cinema as a 15 in 2007. What changed? #askbbfced

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced #30DaysOfNight was rated 15 for cinema with bloody violence being the main classification issue

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced we did receive letters questioning the rating, & when the work came in for DVD release it was reconsidered & the rating raised to 18

4. Q. @BBFC. #askbbfced Carl Nelmes ‏@nelmes316 asks about big budget vs smaller budget horror films

Q. @BBFC. Does "budget" play a role in cert? Hostel 2 -Strong violence & sexual torture (18 uncut) yet a similar movie Grotesque is Banned #askbbfced

A. @BBFC. #akbbfced quite the opposite, films like #TheBlairWitchProject show how threat & intensity can be achieved with few special effects

A. @BBFC. #akbbfced in the case of Grotesque, the issue was a sustained focus on sexual and sadistic violence

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced a case study on Grotesque is available here:

5. Q. @BBFC. #askbbfced Ryan Richardson ‏@RyanricT wants to know about the classification of #Halloween (1978)

Q: @BBFC. #askbbfced 1/3 Halloween (1978) is still classified 18. Is it possible for the film to receive a 15 classification today?

Q: @BBFC. #askbbfced 2/3 While the level of violence is strong, there's no overt detail, nor is there dwelling on the infliction of pain or injury

Q: @BBFC. #askbbfced 3/3 Finally, there's a strong sense of threat/menace too which I think is appropriately treated to receive a 15 classification

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced we most recently classified #Halloween in 2012, you can see the long BBFCinsight here:

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced the strong & sustained threat & menace in a domestic environment took the film to 18

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced at 15 the Guidelines state that sustained focus on sadistic or sexual threat is unlikely to be acceptable

6. Q. @BBFC. #askbbfced Ben Davies ‏@giratalkialga asks about violence in comedy horror films

Q. @BBFC #askbbfced Is it the tone or the strength of the violence that takes priority when rating horror comedies (e.g. Evil Dead 2)?

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced it really depends on how these are presented in the film & how they interact as classification issues

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced #EvilDead2 was classified down from 18 to 15 in 2008

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced the violence, threat & strong language in the film can now be accommodated at 15

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced the dated special effects, comedy context & distancing from a real world setting also help keep the violence at 15.

7. Q. @BBFC. #askbbfced Emma ‏@weneedtotroll asks about threat in 12A & 15 horror films

Q. @BBFC. Why was THE SHALLOWS a 15 and 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE a 12A when the sense of dread in the latter felt much more unrelenting? #askbbfced

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced the long BBFCinsight for #10CloverfieldLane is here:

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced it is a strong 12A but in line with the Guidelines at 12A

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced the sustained threat in a real world setting in #TheShallows & bloody injury detail took it to 15

A. @BBFC. #askbbfced the long BBFCinsight for #TheShallows is here:
