Extended Classification Information (*SPOILER ALERT* Information may include plot details) SOMERS TOWN is a drama about the friendship which develops between a young Nottingham runaway who comes to London in search of a better life and the son of a Polish immigrant who lives in Somers Town in London. It was passed uncut ‘12A’ for one use of strong language, moderate sex references and violence. The BBFC’s Guidelines at ‘12A’ state that ‘Sexual activity may be implied. Sexual references must reflect what is likely to be familiar to most adolescents but should not go beyond what is suitable for them’, that ‘violence must not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood’ and that ‘the use of strong language (e.g. 'fuck') must be infrequent’. The sex references in SOMERS TOWN include a reference to ‘wanking’ and brief visual impression of a naked youth masturbating, but these are handled in a manner sufficiently discreet and sensitive as to be both familiar to adolescents and yet unlikely to offend the likely audience for the film. The solitary use of strong language is one whispered use while the two youths at the heart of the film are chatting. Violence in SOMERS TOWN includes a scene in which a trio of youths attack a fourth young man (with impact from blows often masked and some blood seen on the victim’s face only after the attack) and a father slapping his son during an argument.
