Extended Classification Information (*SPOILER ALERT* Information may include plot details) TORMENTED is a horror feature about a group of school bullies who get their come uppance. The film was passed '15' for strong horror, violence and sex references. BBFC Guidelines for horror and violence at '15' state that 'Strong threat and menace are permitted. The strongest gory moments are unlikely to be acceptable' and 'Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury'. The strongest moments of violence in the film comprise the stabbing of someone's neck and hands with a screwdriver, as well as suggestion that a boy is killed by having pencils stuck up his nostrils before his head is slammed down. Though these sequences contain strong violence, they are not dwelt on unduly, nor are they bloody enough to require the highest category. Other sequences of bloodier or more gory violence (such as blood spurting copiously from a woman's severed wrists, an eye popping out of its socket and an impalement on railings) are tinged by a comedic element that mitigate the horror considerably. The film also contained some sex scenes (specifically sight of people undressing each other followed by the thrusting of buttocks) and strong sex references (to, for example, anal sex and erections and penetration) which were contained at the category required for the violence as BBFC Guidelines for sex at '15' state: 'Sexual activity may be portrayed but without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour'.

During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification. Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission. Further Information on post-production changes (*SPOILER ALERT* Information may include plot details) This film was originally shown to the BBFC in an unfinished version. The BBFC advised the company that the film was likely to receive a '18' classification but that the requested '15' certificate could be achieved by making reductions to a number of scenes. In particular the BBFC suggested that the number of blows in a fight scene should be reduced; an aggressive use of very strong language should be removed; sexual bullying of a naked young male in showers should be significantly reduced; sexualised killing of a partially naked young male should be significantly reduced; visual element of a severed penis in condom in comic context should be reduced; focus on a screwdriver embedded in hand should be reduced; focus on screwdriver in neck should be reduced, along with subsequent closer focus on neck wound as blood flows. When the finished version of the film was submitted, all the reductions had been made satisfactorily and the film was classified '15'.
