THE WHIP AND THE BODY is a Gothic horror drama, from 1963, in which a notoriously cruel man is murdered, only to return as a ghost.
- Violence
There are a number of scenes of whipping, some of which result in the tearing open of clothes and the infliction of marks on the body. Some of the sequences have a sexualised edge, suggesting arousal at the whippings.
Other scenes of violence include a man being stabbed in the neck; the impact is hidden from view, but some blood is seen on his skin and on the floor afterwards. Another man is found with blood on his clothes and skin, and a woman stabs herself without clear sight of impact
Other issues include some scenes of moderate horror, as ghostly faces appear at windows, and as strange moaning sounds are heard in hallways.
