WALTZ WITH BASHIR is an animated Hebrew language film about the Lebanese war from the early 1980s. Seen through the eyes of the film's director, it is the story of his experiences as an Israeli soldier during the conflict, looking back through conversations with his friends as he tries to remember the day of a dreadful massacre. It was passed 18 for one scene of strong animated sex.
The BBFC Guidelines at 15 state that sexual activity may be portrayed but without strong detail. In one scene however, in which an Israeli army officer is seen watching a pornographic film, there are images of an animated man penetrating an animated woman. This scene was considered too strong for the 15 category and more appropriately placed at 18 where explicit images of sexual activity are permitted so long as they are exceptionally justified by context and the work is not a sex work. With the film containing profound observations about Israel's relationship with its Arab neighbours and the senselessness of war, this was clearly considered the case.
Additionally, WALTZ WITH BASHIR contains real video footage of the aftermath of the massacre, showing murdered men, women and children lying lifeless on the ground. The images are shocking and although used with great responsibility by the film maker, may prove upsetting to some. The film also contains moderate war violence and some occasional gory moments.
