NEW MOON, the follow-up film to TWILIGHT, is a romantic fantasy drama in which the on-going romance between Bella, a young woman, and Edward, a young male vampire, is developed. During the course of the film Bella also forms a very strong attachment to Jacob, another young man who happens to be a werewolf. The work was passed '12' for moderate fantasy violence and horror.
BBFC Guidelines at '12A' / ‘12’ state that 'moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'. They go on to state that 'moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by context'. The horror and threat in this film is not overly intense but the sight of large CGI (computer-generated imagery) wolves snarling, fighting and chasing other characters was considered too strong for 'PG'. The violence in the film, the majority of which involves vampires - fighting either amongst themselves or against werewolves - is quite physical at times but clearly very fantastical. Some of the vampire on vampire fight sequences include spectacular throws in which the protagonists are hurled against walls or smashed down onto the floor (shattering marble floor tiles on one occasion). However, little blood is seen and almost nothing is shown in terms of injury detail. In one very brief scene a vampire is seen to have his head and arms ripped off but there is no blood or gruesome detail.
The language in NEW MOON, which includes the terms ‘crap’ and ‘fricking’, would have been allowed at a lower classification category.
