TOTAL RECALL is a 1990 science fiction action adventure film in which a man takes a 'virtual holiday' to Mars with unforeseen consequences. The film was originally classified '18' for cinema and video release in 1990 but this cinema re-release has been classified '15' for strong language and violence.
The film contains around 30 uses of strong language. The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example 'fuck')'. The Guidelines at '15' also state 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable'. There is some sight of bloody bullet holes, including a couple of bullet holes in foreheads, and some bloody bullet impacts as various characters are shot. However, little is seen in terms of injury detail and there is no dwelling on the infliction of pain or injury. In one scene, a man is stabbed in the neck with a large bolt, resulting in a brief gory image, after which a man is impaled through the head with a sharp pole. However, the images in question are relatively brief and the impact of the violence is reduced by the fantastical setting and by the comic one liners delivered by the main character.
TOTAL RECALL also includes some moderate verbal sex references and a scene in which a mutant prostitute exposes her three breasts. In one scene a fish tank is knocked to the ground and several goldfish are then briefly seen flapping around on the floor. However, there is no evidence that the fish were treated cruelly by the film makers.
