Note: The following text may contain spoilers

SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK is a complex drama about a theatre director who struggles with his work and the women in his life as he attempts to create a full-size replica of New York City inside a warehouse as part of his new play. The film was passed ‘15’ for strong language, sex references and nudity.

The BBFC Guidelines at ‘12A’ allow only infrequent use of strong language (e.g. ‘fuck’). That particular term is used on about thirty occasions in this film, too many for a ‘12A’ but permitted at ‘15’, at which classification Guidelines allow for the frequent use of strong language.

The Guidelines at ‘15’ also allow strong verbal references to sexual behaviour. The several verbal sex references in this work are comfortably contained at ‘15’ and would probably have been allowed at ‘12A’. The film also contains female breast nudity (in a sexual context) and in a separate scene a naked, tattooed lady is seen blowing soap bubbles in a small booth.

SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK also contains some very minor verbal references to drugs.
