STAR TREK – INTO DARKNESS is a science fiction action adventure film in which the crew of the Starship Enterprise are charged with hunting down a wanted terrorist, even if that takes them into enemy territory. It is rated 12A for moderate violence and threat.

There are many scenes of moderate violence, including battles with laser guns in which human and alien characters are shot and killed. There is no sight of blood or injury, although some are left with burn marks on their clothing or skin. In one sequence, a character uses a knife to stab and kill some opponents but the low lighting means that the impacts are hidden in shadow and no wound detail is visible. There are some scenes of extended hand to hand combat with crunching sound effects implying that heavy blows are being dealt to character's faces and bodies. However, in a couple of these scenes, the characters have superhuman capabilities and are not affected by the blows. In one scene a character stamps on someone's ankle below the edge of the frame, before crushing a man's head between his hands. Both acts of violence are indicated through the use of sound effects only and neither the violence or the aftermath are shown on screen.

The film also contains many scenes in which characters are under threat. The threat takes many forms, including arrow-firing warriors, erupting volcanoes, crashing spaceships, and collapsing buildings. While these sequences of threat may last for some time they are laced with comic asides and the emphasis is on action and adventure rather than direct or sustained threat.

The film also contains some mild bad language, including uses of ‘bastard’, ‘bloody’, ‘son of a bitch’, ‘piss' and ‘shit’.

There are also some mild sex references, including a character waking up in bed beside two women and a man sneaking a look at a woman in her underwear as she gets changed.

No-one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video or DVD.
