SOUVENIRS DE LA MAISON CLOSE - HOUSE OF TOLERANCE is a French language drama, subtitled in English, about the lives of a group of prostitutes living in a high class brothel in fin de siecle Paris. It was classified '18' for strong sex and infrequent sexual violence.

There are scenes of strong sex between the women and their clients. These include depictions of oral sex and rear entry thrusting, often showing the women topless or with brief sight of pubic hair. One scene also implies a brief element of erotic asphyxiation. The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state 'Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context'. The constant focus on sex, coupled with elements of fetishism, mean the film is more appropriately classified at '18'.

In one scene, one of the brothel's most popular women is tied up and subjected to a brutal attack by a previously friendly regular client. He runs a scalpel lightly over her nipples and throat and inside her mouth, before slitting her mouth open on both sides of her cheeks. There is no actual sight of cutting, although we do see the woman's scars as they heal, and she has a few distressing flash backs that imply how she received the wounds. One of these flashbacks shows her screaming with a blood-covered face. The Guidelines at '15' state 'Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is [...] unlikely to be acceptable' and the film's infrequent sexual violence is more appropriately classified at '18'. However, the scenes in question are not presented in a manner that eroticises or endorses sexual violence.

There is some sight of opium smoking by a prostitute, but the film does not glamorise or endorse drug use. The brothel madam severely reprimands the woman in question when she catches her smoking the drug. There are infrequent uses of strong language, as well as some milder terms.
