THE SOCIAL NETWORK is a drama based on the true story of the creation of the social networking website Facebook. The film was classified '12A' for infrequent strong language and drug use.

The film includes infrequent strong language in the dialogue, with two clear uses of strong language uttered by characters who are not directing the language at any other character. Under language the BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state that 'the use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent'.

The film also includes scenes in which drug use is depicted. These are infrequent and mostly consist of undetailed cannabis use in party scenes. However in one party scene we see a young female lying on a table with her shirt opened. In brief and out-of-focus visuals we see cocaine powder arranged on her stomach, followed by sight of a woman, and then a man, leaning forward with a straw. There is no actual sight of the drug being taken. When the police arrive the cocaine is quickly brushed from the woman's stomach, but residue is found on a central characters' hand and the group are all arrested. Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state that 'any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or give instructional detail'. Although these are young and attractive people, they are led by an unsympathetic character whose actions cost him his job at Facebook. The focus is on the transgressive behaviour rather than any detail of drug use. There is no instructional detail and no particular glamorisation given the context. It was therefore allowable at '12A'.

The film also includes moderate sex references and some mild language (eg. 'asshole', 'shit', 'bitch').
